Once I finished reading this books, I checked out the ratings from the various sites like Goodreads and Storygraph and I was shocked. The average rating across the sites is hovering around a 3.4 which I do not understand. This book was absolutely delightful!
This was a modern genderbent retelling of the Eros and Psyche myth where Eros is a lady. (I had forgotten this when I started reading so was pleasantly surprised by fem-Eros lol.) I have honestly not read many Greek myth retellings and I’m happy for this to be my first in a while. If you are a looking for a deep complex reimagining, you may want to pass on this one. It’s a sweet romantic love story with minimal plot and honestly, that’s all it needed to be.
I adored Psyche with all of her neuroses, her quiet bravery and her kind heart. She proves that you don’t have to be morally gray in order to be a complex character with flaws. It was sweet to see how she brought out the humanity in Eros and reminded Eros that there is still good in the world. Their romance just warmed my heart.
The Greek gods are depicted as somewhere between fae creatures and Eldritch horrors. It was quite original and unique in my opinion. Despite the Eldritch horror twist, Rivera still keeps their personalities in line with the original myths (particularly Poseidon, what a dick).
I would not say I’m a connoisseur of spicy scenes but the one spicy scene in this book was not the best. It was cringey at points. Eros said ‘good girl’ way too much which I thought was a bit out of character.
All in all, 4 star read, please check this one out!
